Don't think of it as a tax on SUV's. Think of it as a discount for those buying cars that don't tip over or bang up the street with their overweight selves.

Actually, I'd rather see the tax indexed to the fuel efficiency of the model of car. Some SUV's get better gas milage than some sedans. Most SUV's are more fuel efficient than a Lamborghini, for example.

Hooray! Both articles are great news. I'm eagerly awaiting the death of my current car (75K miles and counting) so that I can justify the purchase of a hybrid. As for the City of Chicago tax, perhaps they could have included the "lightweight" SUVs in the tax and spared those of us who like to eat out. Maybe I'll just have to eat in the suburbs more often :)

just recently, after nearly being pulverized by a ford expedition, i was thinking that the idea of a luxury SUV is somewhat indicative of what's wrong with our country. the very idea of a luxury sports utility vehicle is ridiculous. Luxurious utility might be possible by coincidence but certainly not be design. SUV is simply a misnomer, and no one is more aware of this than the people who build them. 99% of owners will take take them "off-road." it's a status symbol for many, a minivan with pinache for some. maybe the appeal is the ability to go off-roading in antartica if need be. anyway, if its just another car, the newest fad, why not take it up a notch? but while your at it, don't forget to get in on any other expanding markets - only americans have the sang froid to make luxury SUV's and hybrids, and market both with indubitable sincerity. just like we can make the world safe by overthrowing one of a few renegade producers of weapons of mass destruction and not the others, only to find that this particular renegade doesn't have any w.m.d.'s, and then, well so what? kyoto protocols, free trade, iraq... we're like a middle school bully, learing at the rest of the world, and saying, "yeah? what are gonna do about it?"

that's "never take them 'off-road'." not "take take them 'off-road'."
