Clark is a fish. He's got no political chops. Dean makes some interesting gaffes, but he's got the fire and the skills to go all the way.

Clark's resume is great, but Bush would eat Clark alive in a modern media campaign, while Dean might just sting Bush hard enough to make it stick.

Dean's our guy, and as soon as we start recognizing that so he can go moderate for the general election, the better.

Clark's obviously got some political chops if he's managed to come up with $10M in the last quarter of 2004. He may not be as vicious a debater, but there's a huge turnoff factor associated with that aspect of Dean anyway, at least for the voters who will actually decide this election.

Of course I'll support Dean if he gets the nomination, but what you're saying is seriously premature - there'll be plenty of time to coalesce around a candidate once the primaries are out of the way (they're early this year, you know). I find this whole notion going around that it's somehow treasonous to support someone besides Dean really insulting and not at all helpful.

Fund raising isn't the same as political chops. I'm referring more to the occasions when, for example, Clark had to ask his assistant what his position on Iraq was.

Now, Bush is not gaffe free himself, but for some reason, the press and the public savage the Left on those problems more than they savage the Right.

The early primaries are important. I'm convinced Dean can tack to the center (where he is comfortable, despite what the Freepers and NewsMAXies say). A centrist position won't win the Democratic primaries easily, however. If he can beat Gephardt by one vote in Iowa and thump Kerry in New Hampshire, Dean has a chance to knock most of the candidates out, with the possible exception of Clark, and save his war chest for the face off with Bush.

Hopefully, there won't be bad blood between them, since Clark is a pretty good VP choice.

If the primaries drag on, however, money gets harder to come by for the general election since most traditional sources will have pushed hard for the primary wins. Just my opinion.

Obviously we don't want the primaries to drag on... but I don't think that's a reason to start supporting Dean now even if you like another candidate, which is what you seem to be advocating. Clark and other candidates still have a small chance, if you buy Ezra's analysis, which I do... and as far as I'm concerned, Clark's foibles are far less damaging than Dean's divisiveness for the general election. Did you read this piece from Slate?

I did read the piece and I thought it was dead wrong. Dean is doing the right thing by staking out an identity different from Clinton and the DLC. I don't see him as belittling them so much as setting out who he is and who he can be as president.

If you dislike Dean and like someone else, vote for them, but remember what happened when a bunch of Floridians voted for Nader. Each vote has to be considered in the context of its ultimate effect.
