Will Baude wishes the Netflix class action settlement were in cold hard cash rather than services. I couldn't agree more, and I have the further complaint that signing up to receive the the additional DVD would actually be a net loss for me. This is not because my time is so valuable, but rather because the upgrade will auto-renew after the month is over. That's right, the one month "settlement" may actually be a strategy to build Netflix's subscription base.
For my part, I know I can't be trusted to cancel the upgrade after the month is over -- after all, my demonstrated inability to return rentals in a timely fashion is a big reason I signed up for Netflix in the first place. I suspect the same is true for many Netflix customers.

I agree with Will Baude on a different aspect, it would be much more amusing if the lawyers for the suit were paid with $2.5 million in Netflix rentals. :)
And note that the customers will continue to be billed at the high rate the next month unless they opt out! The same should be true of the lawyers (and oh how I would laugh if they missed the deadline).
Of course, if I were in charge of terms of the settlement, I'd just order them to buy more copies of all the DVDs that I want to watch. A lot of classic movies, when they come out on DVD for the first time, instantly have a "very long wait." Right now, I'd like to see Two For The Road, but I guess I'll have to wait for that one frickin' copy they got for the entire country to get around to me.
