Despite the initial inhibitory effects

1. From Reactive Reports: "Drinking alcoholic beverages with working colleagues after a customary ten-hour day at the office is an important part of business society in Japan, despite the fact that 40 to 45% of the Japanese people possess inactive ALDH2." ALDH2 is an enzyme that eliminates the evil acetaldehyde created in ethanol metabolism, and something many Asians are missing. [via Metafilter]

2. Microsoft has developed new screen text fonts so that we can have "a more enjoyable on-screen reading experience." They don't look too bad, actually, although I'm not impressed with the name Calibri. [via kottke.org]

3. And this discussion of whether preschool should be universal or targeted to needy children might be a good primer for those who are debating the Preschool for All legislation here in Illinois. [via Joanne Jacobs]

Interesting Microsoft would default to a sans-serif font. I thought typographic theory held that for large amounts of text a serif'd font, with its clues to letter shape read more easily than a sans serif font, which is better for small bursts of text like headlines or signs.

Perhaps we now write in choppier sentences and paragraphs? Or maybe "typographic theory" as it was explained to me lo those many years ago, was just aother phrase for "current fashion".

I thought that too, but it seems like the conventional wisdom now is that serif fonts don't work as well on a screen as they do on a piece of paper. I wonder if education and reading history affect it (ie if you spend your formative reading moments with serif fonts...)

I do think we're writing in choppier paragraphs though (thanks in part to blogs).

Off the cuff, Josh's-own-theory of gov't subsidies says only the poor should get them (bottom third? bottom half? less? more?).

Two reasons.

1. The rich don't need help
2. You shouldn't get so much that you become rich.

so Josh doesn't support universal public education at higher grades?
