The Fighting Irish

St. Patrick's festivities aside, I was glad to see Notre Dame go down in the first round of the NCAA tournament this year -- not because I care one way or another about their athletic fortunes, but rather because of their bizarre proprietary claims toward the little fighting leprechaun that serves as their logo (I have reproduced it here without permission). I've never been a particularly loyal or enthusiastic alum of Cathedral High School, but surely it deserves better than this from the school it goes to such lengths to emulate. After all, if Notre Dame has any cult following (and I had enough years of Catholic education to assure you that it does) among young Catholic students then it's at least in part due to this whole feeder school phenomenon.

I always hated Notre Dame football, so I guess this is just one more log on the fire.
