Voracious readers who take long trips
The same friends who were buzzing about that surfer's theory of everything last night were also very enthusiastic about Amazon's new Kindle. I don't have much to say about it myself except that 1) I think electronic paper is cool and 2) I love Jason Kottke's friend's characterization of it as the "Pontiac Aztec of e-readers." But Tyler Cowen has an interesting take, and offers links to a couple of reviews to boot.
The tech critic Robert Scoble HATES the thing. Some of his critiques seem a little weird (No social network?), but a couple of them, particularly the critique of the placement of the page turning buttons, and the absence of a natural place to pick it up, seem right on. This current "This Week in Tech" podcast with Leo Laporte and John Dvorak discuss the thing for most of the hour.
I'm not yet at the point where I want any sort of device like this, but I do like the look of the Bookeen by Cybook better than the Sony or the Kindle. This is the first generation of these e-ink devices, so I'm sure the best policy is to just hold out until Gen 2 or 3.
I'm interested in seeing publishers subtract the cost of printing and materials when they sell e-books so there's an incentive while they still make the same profits. I'd really like to see some sort of code-based system where you'd get an e-book version of any dead tree book you bought.
i agree that the cybook device looks a lot cooler.
i wish they would make a portable internet browser this approximate size and shape. it's already wireless, why can't i just go online? maybe that's what an iphone is for -- but this could let you read a lot more comfortably.
